What sets the price, and why.

Nordic day-ahead power by zone, the hydro storage behind it, and the fuels and currencies that move both.

Day-ahead power by zone

Today's range for every Nordic bidding zone, on one shared axis. The axis is euro cents per kWh — the currency the power actually clears in — because a Norwegian krone and a Swedish krona are not the same ruler and laying them side by side would invent a difference that is not there. Each zone's own currency is on the right. The tick marks today's average.

The day, hour by hour

Day-ahead prices are published the afternoon before, so tomorrow is usually known by about 13:00 CET. The cheapest three-hour run is marked: that is the window worth moving a car charge or a wash into.

The grid, right now

What is actually generating across the Nordics this minute, and which way it is flowing. The flows are the answer to the map above: a zone is dear when it is exporting into a dearer neighbour and cheap when its power has nowhere to go.

Weather, the only thing that moves first

Everything else on this page measures something that has already happened — prices that cleared yesterday, reservoirs read last week. Temperature sets demand and wind sets supply, both before the market prices either. Heating demand is degree-hours below 15°C over the next two days: the gap matters far more than the temperature on its own.

Hydro storage, against normal

Nordic power is mostly water, so this is the closest thing to a forecast on the page. A fill percentage alone says nothing — 52% could be a normal autumn or a hard winter coming. What matters is the gap from the median for this same week across every year since 1995, which is what the bars show.

Fuels, carbon and currency

What the marginal power plant burns, what it pays to emit, and the exchange rates between the price that is set and the bill that is paid. The thin bar under each is where the price sits in its own six-month range: a number can fall on the day and still be near the top of where it has been.

Being built, laid and switched on

Projects and machines rather than share prices: cables between countries, reactors being licensed, factories for electrolysers. Searched by topic across twenty terms, filtered to outlets that report rather than recycle, and de-duplicated — one cable factory opening reached four publications under four headlines.
